In his 1922 Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails book, Harry McElhone (owner of Harry's New York Bar in Paris) took credit for the invention of this drink. From the From Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails, ca. Harry MacElhone's 1922 cocktail book "Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails" gives credit to Pat MacGarry at Buck's Club in London some time after WWI. Here are some of the ads which friends have turned up and scanned from various London publications, contemporaneous with the publication of the Savoy Cocktail Book. BTW: McElhone often can be found misspelled as Mc Elhone, MacElhone or Mac Elhone. The Jupiter dates to 1923 when it appeared in Harry McElhone's, Harry of Ciro's ABC of Mixing Cocktails. The first recipes for the Sidecar appear in 1922, in Harry MacElhone's Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails and Robert Vermeire's Cocktails and How to Mix Them. In Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails (1922), Harry McElhone also initially credits Macgarry of Buck's Club, but in later editions supposedly credits himself. This is the earliest known recipe, and it appeared in two books published in 1922; Robert Vermeire's "Cocktails and How to Mix Them", and Harry MacElhone's Harry's "ABC of Mixing Cocktails". Following the 1922 “Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails” recipe book, the Side Car combines Courvoisier VS, Cointreau and fresh lemon juice. Harry McElhone (Harry's New York Bar, Paris - opposite Ciro's). The Sidecar was first mentioned in print in 1922 into two cocktails books – Cocktails: How to Mix Them by Robert Vermiere and ABC of Mixing Cocktails by Harry MacElhone.
